 The San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District (the District) is the largest fire district in San Diego County. The District was formed on July 1, 1988 through a merger of the Spring Valley and the Grossmont/Mt. Helix Fire Protection Districts, and again on July 3, 2008 with the East County Fire Protection District. The District covers a 47 square mile area in the Eastern portion of urban San Diego County, serving the Communities of Bostonia, Casa de Oro, Crest, Grossmont/Mt. Helix, La Presa, Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley, and unincorporated areas of El Cajon and La Mesa. Our District protects various commercial and industrial operations, single-family residences, large multi-unit apartment and condominium projects, future planned resort developments, and an expansive urban/wildland interface area. The Fire District serves approximately 134,000 residents. Our suppression force responds to approximately 11,000, plus fire and medical-related emergencies annually. The Fire Chief serves under the direction of the Board of Directors, and is responsible for five primary categories: Leadership, Overall District Management, Fiscal Management, Relationship with the Board of Directors and Community, and Public Relations. On December 31, 2012, the San Miguel Fire District entered into a Cooperative Agreement with CAL FIRE. Our mission has remained unchanged – to Serve, Educate and Respond to our citizen and community needs in the most cost effective and efficient manner possible.  The men and women that work either directly for the District or through our cooperative agreement with CAL FIRE, are dedicated to the communities we serve and are here for you should you need our services.
Operationally, all 8 fire stations in the District are open, fully staffed and have Paramedics assigned to all apparatus.  We hope to return a second apparatus (Engine 15) back into service within the next few years as the economy strengthens and we reduce the unfunded liabilities within the District and continue to recognize the benefits of our Cooperative Agreement with CAL FIRE. Financially, the District is currently working with the State Controller’s Audit Division to review our FY 2010/2011 and FY 2011/2012 Annual Financial Transactions Reports and the Independent Auditor’s Report for FY 2011/2012.  Every year, the District’s finances are reviewed by an independent auditor.  Historically, the District’s independent audits have been given an “Unqualified” rating, including the audits for FY 2010/2011 and FY 2011/2012.  An Unqualified rating on an audit report is the best rating the District could receive from an external auditor.  It is our intent to rebuild the District’s fiscal strength through reductions in unfunded liabilities and increasing our reserve funds.  The Fire Prevention and Community Outreach Divisions remain active.  The District is updating our weed abatement ordinance to align with County of San Diego standards.  You can review our weed abatement standards in our Fire Prevention section of the website.  To file an overgrown brush or weed complaint, you can complete to the confidential report form.   Recently, through grant funding, we have added over 700 smoke and CO detectors in our local mobile home parks.  We are working with local high schools to teach “Hands Only CPR” classes, and with the Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) to provide basic prevention and safety awareness training.
